Whitebox GAT is an exciting open-source GIS project. Whitebox is both easy-to-use and very powerful. This makes it ideal for teaching GIS or remote sensing classes, and also for research and industry applications. Whitebox is as much a philosophical approach to geomatics as it is a GIS/Remote Sensing package. This philosophy of transparency (i.e. open-access rather than simply open-source), from which Whitebox derives its name, has led to the development of some rather unique and innovative features in the software.
